GPF condemns far-right boat hindering life savings in the Mediterranean

Wednesday, July 19, 2017 - 20:15

Enrique Guerrero Salom MEP, Co-Chair of the Global Progressive Forum, and Elena Valenciano MEP, Vice-President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, strongly expressed their condemnation at the dangerous and hate-fueling far-right initiative to send a boat in the Mediterranean to forbid migrants’ rafts to reach European shores.

“The so-called “Defend Europe” operation is preventing the NGOs, European coastguards and rescue teams to conduct in a safe manner their crucial life-savings operations in the Mediterranean. I would like to thank and praise their decisive work in precarious conditions in order to save as many lives as possible in the risky crossing towards our coasts. ”, Guerrero Salom stated.

2016 was the deadliest year in the Mediterranean, and more than 2400 people already lost their lives crossing the Sea in 2017.

“The C-Star patrol boat is a dangerous symbol of the far-right hate speech against civilians fleeing wars and despair. We Socialists and Democrats intend to put solidarity at the heart of our approach to migration policy.”

Enrique Guerrero Salom MEP and Elena Valenciano MEP ask national authorities and Commissioner Avromopoulos to stop this dangerous initiative.  The GPF remains supportive of a European holistic and common approach to the current migration challenge, so as to avoid human tragedies, and of putting in place safe routes and applying relocation schemes.
