11:00 to 12:30

12th JUNE PES CONGRESS BUDAPEST

ROUND TABLE ON "THE STATE OF DEMOCRACY IN EUROPE" from 11h.00 to 12h.30 in BRAHMS Room, Budapest Congress Centre.

The Global Progressive Forum will take part to the PES Congress in Budapest with a round table on "The State of democracy in Europe. As the President of S&D Group, Gianni Pittella has many times reminded that Socialists and Democrats: "we have the responsibility to remain vigilant and to ensure that European Governments promote the core values of the European Union". The Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) also has revealed an alarming situation regarding the state of democracy and rule of law in its 47 member states, where democratic shortcomings are ever more pronounced. European societies have become increasingly vulnerable to terrorism, extreme violence, and instability, though the maintenance of democratic security remains vital for lasting peace. As S&D Group, this is an unacceptable situation. We must fight the extreme right-wing and conservatives. Therefore, the concern for democracy and civil liberties keeps growing.
