Hannes Swoboda, President of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, visited Tunisia, accompanied by Javier Moreno Sánchez, Secretary General of the Global Progressive Forum, for an official visit three years after the beginning of the Revolution that followed Mohamed Bouazizi’s immolation. They met with the President of the National Constituent Assembly, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs as well as members from the mais political parties and civil society and media representatives.
In the end of his visit, Hannes Swoboda declared:
“The European Union, and the S&D Group in the European Parliament in particular, have supported from the beginning the goal of the Tunisian transformation: a democratic system, a free society and the respect for men and women’s rights.
This is a crucial moment for Tunisia and I recognise the effort made by all the participants in the national dialogue. The most recent sign of this success is the nomination of M. Mehdi Jooma as Prime Minister.
The next elections will be a decisive test to the soundness of the democratic transformation. It is of paramount importance that the elections are prepared with all prudence and diligence.
The European Union must continue to support Tunisia’s democratisation process. We must strengthen our cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The degradation of Tunisia’s safety situation would have disastrous consequences for the country, its democratisation and even for the European Union.
